CORTEZ - Leading Edge Students Zea
Beaver and Shirley Dennison receive a scholarship from Region 9
Economic Development District for the NxLevel
Entrepreneurial Training class. Beaver and Dennison both
have extensive experience with the newspaper business.
Dennison has worked in the newspaper and job printing area for
over 30 years and Beaver has a background in bookkeeping and
administrative assistant work. Combined they can achieve
their "long-time dream of providing a much-needed service to the
area."

Graduation 1/27/2005
DURANGO - Graduation for the Fall
2004 Durango Leading Edge class was held on Wednesday, January
26th at Fort Lewis College. Seventeen students and guests
attended the graduation. Seven students completed their
business plan with seventeen completing the course with
attending nine of the twelve courses.

Terry Tannehill, Leading Edge
Instructor, spoke to class about the steps it takes to become an
entrepreneur and the class came a long way from the first day in
September. Four of the students gave presentation on their
business project, business plan and their experience with taking
the class. The students were very grateful for the class and
recommend it to entrepreneurs. They appreciate the
guidance from Tannehill, the SBDC and the guest speakers who
attended the class.

Receive Scholarship
DURANGO - Leading Edge Students H.
Ray Vigil and Linda Sawyer receive scholarships for the NxLevel
Entrepreneurial Training class.
The First National Bank of Durango
presents H. Ray Vigil with a scholarship to attend the
entrepreneurial training course to improve his business skills.
Vigil is an active student at Fort Lewis College (FLC), he is "a
senator for the Associated Students of FLC and serves as a
chairperson for student services." The skills and training
that he is receiving from FLC helps him and his partner own and
operate a seafood distribution company in Durango. The
seafood company will provide the four corners region with fish
from fishermen "along the East, West, Mexican, and Alaskan
coasts."

Region
9 Economic Development District presents Linda Sawyer, from
Bayfield, with a scholarship to attend the entrepreneurial
course to help her write a business plan. Sawyer is a
personal historian, offering "the opportunity for individuals,
families, and organizations to record and preserve their life
stories with in an attractive and professional multi-media
format." Sawyer has been a writer, photographer, editor,
and page designer for over 25 years. She has a passion for
writing and "the value of story telling." |

FARMINGTON - Joe Keck, director of the
Small Business Development Center at Fort Lewis College in
Durango, has a true admiration for risk-takers. After all, Keck
himself took a major risk in 1993 when he and his wife opened a
Hallmark store and JC Penney catalog outlet after years of
working in government jobs in southwest Colorado.
